Tires for MTB

Do you want more grip, the ex-factory tire of your bike is not good enough or your old tire is completely worn out? Here you can find a couple of tips and pieces of information in case you wanted to buy a new MTB tire.

I want to buy tires for MTB: what should I pay attention to?

The dimension of the tire changes depending on the type of bike you have (downhill and dirt bikes have for example smaller wheels and, as a consequence, they also have smaller tires, while fat bikes have extremely wide tires). First of all, you need to know these parameters:

  • Wheel size
  • Tire width
  • Wheel rim width

The size parameters are very important: the tire must fit perfectly in the rim and be stable without rubbing against anything. The best thing to do is to check the size and the parameters of your old or standard tires to get to know the right values and characteristics of your new MTB tires.

Buy tires for MTB: hard tires and fast rolling tires

Hard tires

Hard tires are very stable and keep their position firmly on the rim, especially in case of unexpected punctures. These tires for MTB contain a wire ring that makes the tire firm and stable. The sides of this kind of tire are very often stronger than the sides of fast rolling ones: this gives more stability and resistance to the tire in general. They are also heavier and have consequently a higher rolling resistance.

Fast rolling tires

This kind of tires can be folded. When you buy one of these, you receive a small packet that does not have anything to do with the shape of a tire before mounting it. This depends on the fact that these tires do not contain any ring wire but aramid fibers. Mounting them is often a bit more complicated, but they are definitely lighter and they ride with way less resistance.

Buy tires for MTB with the right outline

hile the size and the width of the tire must suite perfectly to the rim, with the outline of the tire you have more freedom. But: when talking about the tire’s outline, the situations in which you use the tire play an important role, because the choice should be taken considering the ground of your trails and your riding style.

The front wheel should present a stronger tread pattern than the rear wheel in order to obtain a decent traction on the ground. In this case the grip is a bit more important than the rolling resistance. The front wheel of a mountain bike should also dispose of the right outline in order to obtain the necessary grip.

Obviously also your rear wheel needs a good grip but should present a lower rolling resistance thanks to front beveled studs.

Ground:

If you ride a lot on soft grounds, the best choice are coarse-grained MTB tires that properly gouge into sand and mud. On the contrary, on harder and dryer grounds it is better to ride with smaller studs as they create more grip on a bigger surface.

You can find the precise values and features of the single tires in the product description, so that you can understand exactly what’s the perfect tire for you.
