Motocross Helmets: Well protected into the terrain

What could be better than an offroad trip on a motorcycle? But before you start your adventure, you have to choose a suitable helmet. We explain everything you need to know about motocross helmets.

Hard shell, soft core: MX and enduro helmets

Offroad, the world is still all right and everyday life is far away. After an extensive off-road session you feel refreshed and reborn. All you need is a powerful bike, full concentration, a pinch of daring and the right equipment. With the latter, the helmet is of course the most important thing. If your head is protected, you can throw yourself completely into the adventure. For motor sports there are special motocross and enduro helmets, which protect you optimally in the terrain.

Motocross Helmets

The classic motocross helmets (also known as MX helmets) are perfectly tailored for off-road riding. They also offer you freedom of movement, protect your head and provide good ventilation. This ensures that you won't break a sweat even on difficult courses. In comparison to the usual motorcycle helmet, they have a significantly longer and more pointed chin area and a distinctive, movable peak. They are lighter and therefore more comfortable to wear. Since motocross helmets do not have a visor, they are only suitable for long distances to a limited extent. For an action-packed session off-road, however, they are perfect in combination with safety glasses.

Enduro Helmets

Enduro helmets are basically a mixture of everyday and motocross helmets. They have a built-in chin protection, a light construction and good ventilation. Unlike MX helmets, however, Enduro helmets are available with and without visor. So you can ride off-road and keep everything in view, but at the same time longer rides in traffic are also possible. It is not without reason that "enduro" comes from "endurance".

What should you look for when buying a helmet?

Which helmet is the best for you, of course, can not be answered in a general way. High-quality models combine safety and comfort in an optimal way. You should pay attention to the following aspects when you want to buy a new motocross helmet:

Material and workmanship

MX helmets are usually made of plastics such as polycarbonate and thermal resin. These are particularly resilient and at the same time light. The weight of your helmet plays a major role, as too heavy a head protection over a long period of time will cause pain in the neck area. By the way, light in this case does not mean that the corresponding helmet offers less protection. On the contrary: motocross and enduro helmets have been proven to protect you from head injuries despite their light construction.

Inner lining

During a tour over rough and smooth you can start to sweat. This is no problem as long as your helmet has the correct lining. Ideally, the lining is antibacterial and prevents sweat and odours from developing. Many helmets have removable linings that can even be washed in the washing machine. In combination with a sophisticated ventilation system, which is a feature of good MX helmets, you can keep a cool head even when it gets hot.

Perfect fit

Motocross helmets must fit perfectly. It's the only way they can really protect you. In addition to the correct fit, which depends on the shape of your head, a good chin closure is decisive for a secure hold. Especially safe and therefore popular is the so-called double-D fastener. The closing is a bit more complicated, but the strap cannot come loose by external influence.

Orifice and filter

Good motocross and enduro helmets are characterized by suitable protective shields and dirt filters. These ensure that you are protected from flying stones and mud splashes even in the roughest terrain.

The helmet standard ECE 22.05

In Germany the European helmet standard ECE 22.05 is a good indicator for the purchase of a motocross helmet. Only CE-certified motocross helmets offer you the best possible protection in every situation. Helmets with this mark of conformity meet the important criteria of a safe brand. This applies in particular to the durability of the outer shell, the resilience of the chinstrap, good and evenly distributed shock absorption and the size of the field of vision and, if necessary, the tint of the visor. If a helmet has not been tested according to the helmet standard or has not passed the test, you should not buy it under any circumstances.

Goggles, balaclava and padding: the right accessories

The most important accessory for all motocross helmets are the goggles. Make sure that the glasses are compatible with the helmet and that you can wear them comfortably underneath. As the goggles protect your eyes from foreign objects and sunlight, you should always wear them when using a helmet without a visor. Under the helmet, it may be useful to wear an undercap to provide extra protection for your head. Depending on the type of helmet, it may also be worth buying another helmet padding so that you don't have to give up driving even if the padding you used is in the wash.

The right care for motocross helmets

With the right care, even MX helmets can last much longer. For hygienic reasons, you should clean the inner lining regularly and thoroughly. After a ride through puddles, your helmet will not look fresh from the outside either. The shell should therefore be cleaned with a damp cloth and suitable cleaning agents. If your helmet has a visor, you must be particularly careful, as scratches can significantly impair your vision. Special cleaning cloths are best suited for this.
