Buy the right motocross tires

Before buying a new MX tire you should really think about which tire would better fit not only into your bike but also into the tracks that you plan to ride. The tread depth, the form of the blocks, the rubber mix etc... All these aspects are crucial on track. With a couple right hints you will be able to buy the right MX tires for your next off-road adventure.

Which tire suits your bike?

First of all, the new tire must obviously fit into your bike and its rim for what concerns the size. The size of the tire is normally described by three numbers. For example, 80/100-21. The first number indicates the width of the tire (in millimeters). The second number stands for the height of the tire (as a percentage of the width). The last number shows the size of the rim (in inches).

Which motocross tires are suitable for which kind of terrain?

Motocross is a wild sport in which grip plays a fundamental role when it comes to high speed, because it allows to ride fast and safe. The speeding up can turn into something challenging: if the grip is not there, instead of speeding up you will end up digging yourself in the terrain, and this can be fatal in a race.

MX tires are generally much more coarse-grained than most of other tires for bikes, but there are differences also within motocross tires. Once you know the characteristics your bike is compatible with, you can hop on your bike and choose your track.

On which terrains do you want to drive with your MX? Sandy, muddy, soft, hard, grass or pebbles? Are there tight turns? Do you plan to do many jumps? Here are a couple of suggestions to understand what’s the right tire for you:

  • MX tire for soft terrains: on soft terrains (including sandy and muddy ones) it is better to use MX tires with longer and less blocks. Back tires often have a V or shovel-like form: thanks to this form they dig in the terrain and offer good grip and breaking stability. The rubber compound should be slightly harder to provide enough traction even in very soft terrains thanks to the stiffness in combination with the appropriate blocks. In addition to that, wider tires can be used to reduce the sinking process of the tire on softer terrains thanks to the wider base.

  • MX tires for harder terrains: in order to be able to stand with enough stability on hard terrains, you need more and shorter blocks. The distance between the blocks is smaller in comparison with tires for hard terrains, because here there is no risk for the mud to gather between them. The rubber compound should be softer in order to speed up better.

You can obviously also buy motocross tires with middle ranges and characteristics and have perfect all-rounders. But don’t forget to take into consideration that on extreme terrains (either soft or hard) you will quickly reach your limits with an intermediate solution, and you will probably also not perform as good and as safe as you want. But if you normally ride on soft and alternating terrains, an all-rounder could be the right solution.

Important: while buying a new MX tire, don’t forget that front and rear wheels are different. You can understand if it’s a front or rear tire from the product description.
