MX leg protectors: Should not be missing on any motocross gear

The knee joint is a particularly sensitive part of the body, which is particularly susceptible to serious injuries in motocross sports. And the last thing a motocross rider needs is a knee injury that keeps you away from the bike for several months. Therefore you should pay attention to the right protective equipment to avoid serious injuries in case of a fall. We explain where the differences are and what to consider when buying.

Knee guards

Just as with the arm protectors, a distinction is made between protective inserts made of hard plastic and PU foam. Regular knee protectors are particularly suitable for beginners, simple track conditions and if you generally don't ride so often, as they only protect against light stone chips and abrasions, but do not protect the knee from twisting. Sometimes these, especially in the high-priced segment, also have joints built in. The advantage over orthoses is that they are relatively inexpensive and still provide good standard protection. The most popular brands also offer these as a variant for children and young people, so that young riders also have optimum protection on the track.

Knee braces

If you want the best possible protection for your knee, you should use a knee brace. Although they come at a price, they do protect the knee and shin against twisting of the knee, keyword: torn cruciate ligament. So anyone who is riding on demanding motocross or enduro tracks or is a professional MX racer should use an orthosis. These are often also available as carbon veriante, which makes the orthosis even lighter and thus much more comfortable to ride. Just as with normal knee pads, you should check before buying to see if you can wear them comfortably under the MX pants without causing friction. Especially professional drivers swear by orthoses and would never go to a race without them.

Fit

In motocross and enduro riding, legs and knees in particular are frequently stressed. To ensure that a leg protector does not interfere with or even get in the way when riding, you should make sure that it fits properly, especially when it comes to compatibility with the boots. MX boots protect a large part of the shinbone, so if you have leg protectors you should make sure that they do not collide with the boots. This causes unpleasant friction when riding or the knee protector slips and no longer offers the best protection. When buying new, the knee protectors can already be a little tighter, as they usually widen when riding. It is only important that they really do sit in place when you fall.

Accessories & spare parts

Anyone who gets a motocross knee brace or knee protectors should also consider wearing under- or compression stockings. These are worn under the protector and offer additional comfort and prevent the protector from rubbing uncomfortably against the skin. Especially in winter or on cold days these provide additional warmth on the bike. Especially those who buy a more expensive orthosis or protector should check whether spare parts are available for the most important parts. Most brands offer a good selection of straps, pads, shells, rivets and fasteners that you can easily replace.
